London Mayor’s Rent Control Rant Backlash
Sadiq Khan’s rent control rant on Twitter has been met by a furious backlash which was not the feedback he was expecting.
The London Mayor has forever and a day demanded the government give him powers so he can impose rent controls across the city, however retweeting the London Renters Union tweet about thousands of families facing eviction has spectacularly backfired.
Khan decided to lend his weight to the message by tweeting: “Times are incredibly tough. The last thing Londoners need is the constant threat of losing their home due to skyrocketing rents. I will not stop calling on the Govt to do the right thing and grant me the powers to freeze London rents.”
However he would not have expected the type of messages tweeted back with the overall majority of comments not supporting his view but instead are highly critical of Khan’s stance on rent controls and the much maligned ‘cash cow’ ULEZ scheme.
The grandly titled Ultra Low Emission Zone ‘scam’ operates 24/7 every day of the year, except Christmas Day.
Currently the zone covers all areas within the North and South Circular Roads but the Mayor proposes to introduce a massive expansion of the ULEZ’s areas.
The complaints of the scheme’s extension dominated comments below the Mayor’s rent control rant tweet, and in fact many of the housing comments were against Khan’s calling for rent caps.
