Landlords, Agents And Tenants Contacted For Views On Tenancy Strategy
Enfield council has recently contacted tenants, agents and landlords to give their thoughts on its tenancy strategy.
Enfield’s outlines its proposed tenancy strategy which it hopes encourages landlords and letting agencies to back its plans in its efforts to ensure that higher standards are reached for all tenancies within the authority’s borders, so tenants can live safely, healthily and securely in their rented homes.
The council’s draft strategy attempts to help social housing residents to be given lifetime tenancies, with just a few exceptions allowed to offer fixed term tenancies for a suggested minimum of 10 years.
But the council’s strategy wants to ‘persuade’ PRS landlords to offer long term tenancies.
The council hopes to make sure that tenants are fully conversant with and understand their existing tenancy and should be fully aware that lifetime tenancies are their best option, so tenants can live in their homes until it suits them to move on; upon a tenancy ending the council will help tenants avoid being made homeless.
The authority states that its mission is to wipe out the borough’s homelessness issue and promises to work hand in hand with social and private landlords to make sure they fulfil their responsibilities cited under The Homeless Reduction Act 2017.
Enfield’s cabinet member for housing, Councillor Gina Needs says: “Our aim is to enable residents to stay in their homes, feel settled and build strong, sustainable communities. We want our residents to live in homes that are appropriate to their needs and will continue to address housing need and actively prevent homelessness in the borough.”
