Data suggests fewer people ending tenancies because of bad conditions
Data gathered for a specialist insurance firm suggests that 14 per cent of private tenants have moved in the last five years due to the condition of their rental property – a decrease from the 19 per cent recorded in June 2016.
The data sample is very small – only 100 people questioned by Usurv for Cover4LetProperty – but suggests that poor condition is less of a problem than before.
The study showed that in the last five years some 49 per cent of respondents have moved from one rented property to another because of the desire to live in a different area, or because of cost, because they required more space, or because their landlord was selling.
Other reasons given by smaller numbers of respondents included not being allowed to have a pet, not getting on with their neighbours and not getting on with their landlord.
“Two standout results for us. Firstly, that tenants moving due to bad property conditions has decreased, suggesting that let properties are being improved and invested in. And, for the first time, we see that tenants are moving because landlords are selling up” says a spokesman for the insurance provider.
