Court Reform Is A Priority If Section 21 Is Kicked Into Touch

Private rented sector Private Rented Sector (prs) is housing that is privately owned and is let tenants bodies are demanding that when the government abolishes Section 21 it must introduce substantial court reforms; currently even with the notice the average time it takes to regain a property increased to 22.5 weeks.

The Ministry of Justice’s latest figures show that its previous report in Q1 2019 showed the average time to reclaim a landlord’s property was 21.6 weeks.

A trade association is adamant that the ministers’ intention to scrap ‘no fault’ repossessions is a calamity waiting to happen, because even now courts are “unable to cope” with landlords’ applications to evict tenants for perfectly legal reasons.

A spokesperson for the body, said: “With proposals to scrap Section 21 repossessions set to lead to a significant increase in cases brought to the courts, it is now a matter of urgency that the government brings forward its plans for court reform.

“This requires a fully funded, properly staffed, dedicated housing court that can bring rapid justice for landlords and tenants.

“Tinkering with the existing system will not be good enough.”
